What is Vertical and Horizontal Repeat?

When buying Home Decor, Upholstery & Furnishing Fabrics, and Outdoor Fabrics with a pattern, often included in the information is the horizontal and vertical repeat.  These are terms used to describe the length and width within the design print and how it will appear when printed continuously on the fabric.  This information is beneficial when aligning the design for furnishings such as curtain making and upholstery of furniture pieces, chairs and upholstery.

By looking at the design on the fabric, it is possible to see the pattern has been repeated more than once - both across the width (edge to edge) of the fabric and down the fabric.

What is a Horizontal Repeat?

This is measured across from selvedge to selvedge in a straight line.  The repeat will vary depending on the design.

For example in PO74293 Stripe Outdoor Fabric Oxford Blue and White, the stripes are 75mm wide. The repeat is every 150mm.  The repeat includes a blue and a white stripe.

What is a Vertical Repeat?

This is the design measured down the length of the fabric as it comes off the roll.

For example if you are purchasing PO8012 Jumbo Stripe Indoor Outdoor Fabric in Black with the stripes printed from edge to edge, and the stripes are 15.5cm wide, the vertical repeat will be 31cm (as the repeat includes a black and a white stripe).

Home Décor Indoor and Outdoor Fabrics in Geometric designs are a little easier to work out the vertical and horizontal repeat and match the pattern as needed, however Floral and Botanical Fabrics, Paisley Fabrics and some Tropical and Floral Outdoor Fabrics can be a little tricky.

For example PO56318 Island Gem Cotton Home Decor Fabric in Cream by Waverly has both a vertical and horizontal repeat.  The description for this fabric tells us that the vertical repeat is 45cm and horizontal is 46cm.   This information will enable the design to be joined if required, in a way that will add a professional designer finish to your interior home styling.

In high quality Home Décor and Upholstery Fabrics designs like this will look impressive as the print flows continuously.  Remember to check the direction of the design so that it is placed in the most suitable way for the project being completed.

An easy way to remember these terms:

Vertical repeat - design duplicated up and down the roll

Horizontal repeat – design duplicated side to side across the roll
